George joined the Confederate Army , Company A, First Alabama Infantry at Dadeville, AL. (Co. A muster roll)
Was a P.O.W. of the U.S. Army. After the war he nearly starved during his walk back home. Per his obituary "he served 4 years in the Confederate War." Per Greg Wilson, "Pvt. George Thomas Scroggins - Captured at Port Hudson, La. July 9, 1863. Exchanged. Captured at Nashville, Tn Dec. 15, 1864 and held prisoner till the end of the war. Enlisted in the 5th U.S. Volunteer Infantry at Camp Douglas, Illinois, April 18, 1865."

According to the 1900 Tallapoosa CO AL Federal Census, enumerated 8 Jan 1900, George and Mary Jane Scroggins lived in the Eagle Creek area and had 12 children 7 living. The following children were enumerated with their parents, Mary E. b Aug 1882, Albert T. b Jun 1886 and Katie H. b Aug 1893.

Speculation: perhaps the subjects were first buried at Concord and later moved to Memorial Gardens, Jackson Gap, leaving headstones in two locations.

Following the death of his mother, Thelma N. Walden Scroggins (childbirth), he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Ida Sizemore Walden Pinson and Arthur Pinson. Both worked in cotton mills in Sylacauga, AL, before moving to Pike Co. GA and eventually Thomaston to work in the Martha Mills. He graduated R.E. Lee High School, Thomaston, GA, 1948 and the University of Georgia, Athens, 1952. Served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, 2nd Infantry Division 1952-54 (Airborne training at Ft. WARNER ROBINS -- Services for Lon J. Scroggins, Jr. will be 11a.m. Monday July 17 at Oakland Baptist Church with burial at Parkway Memorial Gardens. McCullough Funeral Home in Centerville has charge of arrangements.
Scroggins, 69, died July 14, 2000. Born June 15, 1931 in Sylacauga, AL, he was the son of the late Lon Jack and Thelma Nazarine Walden Scroggins. He was a 1948 graduate of R.E. Lee High School in Thomaston, GA and a 1952 graduate of the University of Georgia. An Army veteran, he served the 2nd Infantry Division as a liaison officer to the 9th ROK in the Korean conflict. He was married 36 years to the late Marion Jones Scroggins of Thomaston[originally Taylor County]. He was employed 35 years at Robins Air Force Base until his 1991 retirement. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church in Warner Robins and the Tyrian Masonic Lodge #111 A&FM.
Survivors include his sons, Steve Scroggins of Macon and John Scroggins of Acworth; his brothers and sisters, Arthur DeWitt Pinson of Warner Robins, Bernice Davis of Madison, Lurline Tidwell of Newnan, Hugh Scroggins of Hollins, AL, Moody Scroggins of Talladega, AL, Bonnie Schrader of Marietta, GA, Evie Duaine Davis of Onley, IL; four grandchildren and his sweetheart, Sandra Gammage, of Warner Robins. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Houston County, 2066 Watson Boulevard, Warner Robins, Ga. 31093
