The Steinberg Family Tree by James Gross

Solomon Joel Steinberg

Solomon Joel Steinberg was one of 2 known brothers. His brother was Morris Steinberg. On his cemetary stone it reads Reb Sholom Jael, grandson of Reb Yitzhok Yaresh, who died for Kiddish Hashem. Reb Yitzhok had been the rebbe in the town of Panevezys, Lithuania and was killed by cossacks (in the 1840-1860's) for refusing to break the Sabbath. The name Steinberg was changed from Steinbach or Steinbuck as this was a derogatory referral. The buck referred to a young or naive man. The following is a description of Solomon: Schulim Joil Steinberg, age 30, traveled on 2/26/1904 from Hamburg via Liverpool to Phila. Passengers address is listed as (nearest relative) Baruch Friedman, {Gov} Ponievise, {Gub} Kovno. He is being met by I.
