Cork No. 1
Brigade
Cork No. 1 Brigade area extended from
Youghal in the east to Ballingeary and Ballyvourney in the West. Its Southern
limit was at Ballinhassig and its Northern extreme at Donoughmore. There were
two Battalions in Cork city and others at Cobh, Donoughmore, Macroom,
Ballinhassig, Ballingeary, Ballincollig, Carrignavar, Ballyvourney, Passage West
and Youghal.
Many of the
volunteers and Commanders from this brigade were buried in the Republican Plot
at St. Finbarr's cemetery in Cork city. An annual commemoration is held here on
Easter Sunday.

The First Battalion covered the city area North of the South Channel of the
river Lee. It was commanded successively by Terence MacSwiney, Fred Murray, Dan
Donovan, Tom Crofts, Patrick (Pa) Murray and Seán O'Donoghue.
