James Russell Sanders

HIT THE BRIDGE

Another Mt. Carmel man lost his life on the railroad. The victim, this time, was James R. Sanders, and he met his death Monday forenoon, while pulling a freight train to Cairo. The scene of the accident was near the little station of Foreman. Sanders, who was a skilled engineer, was driving a big "hog" engine. The exact details of the accident it is difficult to learn, but he was leaning out of his cab window, and his head it is supposed was struck by a nut of the bridge, crushing his skull, and producing insensibility. He was taken on to Cairo, but died as he was being carried into the hospital.

The body of the unfortunate engineer was prepared for burial at Cairo, and in a neat casket was brought to this city on Tuesday's 11:15 a.m. train. It was met at the station by large detachments from the Brotherhoods of Locomotive Engineers and of Firemen, and of the Lodge of Knights of Pythias and escorted to his late residence on West Fourth street.

Mr. Sanders came here as a fireman about the time the railroad shops were removed from Carmi, and had been running on that road under its various managements up to the time of his death, a period of nearly nine years. His first wife died soon after his coming here. Some years ago he was married to Miss Clara Goodwin, who with two children of this union, and one by his first marriage, survive him.

He had been running as an engineer for quite a long time and was getting ___. He was regarded as a safe, sober and industrious engineer. His age was about 35 years old and his home was originally in Hamilton County. He belonged to the various railroad brotherhoods and also to the Knights of Pythias.

The funeral was held from the family residence at 3:30 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon.
