James died November 21, 1957 in Tuscola, Douglas County, Illinois; buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery, Carmi, IL.

He married:
1) Sarah Elizabeth Myers (1889 - 1921) on April 25, 1905 in Carmi, White Country, Illinois.
2) Mary Elizabeth Hurst (1900 - 1993) on January 11, 1923 in Henderson, Kentucky.
