Daniel Bair Dead

One of the best-known men in the Lower end of the County

He helped to build part of the Quarryville Railroad - Brother of David Bair, who was a Banker

Daniel Bair, one of the oldest and best-known men in Southern Lancaster county, died suddenly at his home at 8 o’clock this morning. He lived near Hess Station, which is midway between Quarryville and New Providence. His health had not been of the best for some time, but he was able to be about. This morning he arose in good spirits and ate a hearty breakfast. He seemed to be unusually bright, and after eating he took a seat in an old armchair, near the stove, where he became unconscious and peacefully expired. Neuralgia of the heart was the cause of his death.

Mr. Bair belonged to a prominent family, and was born in Providence Township. He was a brother of the late John Bair of York Furnace, and David Bair, one of the leading bankers and dry good merchants of this city, and Jacob Bair of Camargo. Many years ago, Daniel was employed by his brother, John, at York Furnace, but he has passed the greater part of his life on the property where he died. He was a farmer, and in partnership with the late Daniel D. Hess, he built the several miles of the lower end of the Quarryville railroad. He also was superintendent of different ore mines near his home for years. He was a director in the original company that built the Quarryville railroad. He served several times as supervisor of Providence Township. For years past he had been living retired. He was in his eighty-third year at the time of his death, and his wife, who survives him, is older. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Catherine McSherry and Mrs John Shaub, both residents of York County

Mr. Bair was a member of the old Mennonite church, and was a model man in every respect. He was honest and upright in his dealings, and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He was a good businessman, enterprising and earnest in all he did. He will be greatly missed in the neighborhood. The funeral will take place on Saturday at 12 o’clock from the house, with preaching at the New Providence church at 1:30 o’clock.
